Have you had a hard time finding a protein supplement you could choke down? I know I sure did. The fact that we need to drink these protein shakes 3 or more times per day, means we had better at least like them a little, and loving them would be a real bonus.
However, I’ve found that what one person loves, another hates. So I’ll share with you my favs, but your mileage-may-vary.
I know the general recommendation for protein powders is to drink them in water. If you can do that – more power to you; I have a real hard time getting them down that way, so I prefer to mix mine in a little soy milk. The soy milk flavor seems to help cover or mask any odd taste that may be in the protein powder and actually makes a quite pleasing drink for me. Hey, if it makes it so I can drink the protein – then that’s what I’m gonna do.
Unjury – I love anything Unjury makes. Their vanilla is awesome. I get my Unjury straight from the Unjury.com web site.
Champion Pure Whey Stack – I loved pretty much any of their flavors. I don’t care much for strawberry, so I avoid those, but loved all the ones I tried. I buy my Whey Stack from VitaLady.
These are my favorite two, I’m always trying new samples – so may add more to this list later on. If you have any recommendations, please let me know.
Do we need chewables?
Okay, so I’m over three years post-op, and I’ve struggled with whether or not I truly needed chewable vitamins all this time. It made sense to my mind, that if I chewed them, they would be broken down and more readily absorbed. Right? I’ve heard the stories of whole pills being taken (by normal, non-bypass folks) and them not being digested by passing through the digestive system still intact. Well, if that were true for “normies”, then it would be especially true for us bypassers. So all this time, I’ve been going and operating under this theory that chewable is better. I’m normally an investigating it myself kinda gal, I prefer to think for myself and quite often “think outside the box”; so don’t ask me why I hadn’t thought of this until this morning….. I decided to do an experiment.
I took one of my Calcium Citrate pills and placed it in some water in a glass and wanted to see how long it would take for this pill to dissolve. To my amazement, it took just under two minutes for the calcium pill to completely dissolve in just plain tap water. Now I know that things move pretty quickly through my new system, but I know that it takes longer than two minutes and that there are some digestive juices and liquids a bit harsher than just water along the way, so I’m now confident that I can take at least my calcium in regular whole pill form and be okay.
Now to try my other pills to see what those results are. I’ll let ya know.
